AutumnDay I have been making it easier on myself by circling the sharps/flats

Both Alfred's and Piano Adventure beginners' books have an extra colour besides black and white and for the world of me I cannot understand why they don't colour the notes that are sharpened or flatted. At least throughout the first books. I did that myself for the longest time (in Photoshop), until I didn't need it anymore.

It does, but even so sometimes my brain will just repeatedly not register an accidental in some places so I write it in and don't have to worry about it next time 🙂

A few years ago I listened to a lecture by Graham Fitch on “memorization” and he talked about other types of memory except muscle memory.
Some of this might be more suitable for more advanced students.
Here are some suggestions that I think weren’t mentioned yet to fight muscle memory (he also mentioned other methods that were already discussed in the thread) :
1 play the melody with one finger (but as close as possible to a good performance). Or play the white keys with your RH and black keys with LH.
2 Switch hands or play one part/s and sing another (for example play the accompaniment with 2 hands and sing the melody)
3 Transpose to another key
4 Zigzag practice- 2 bars RH only 2 bars LH only and see if you don’t get confused. Or play 2 bars and sing 2 bars.

That is so cool that you got to play on several pianos AND that you felt more and more comfortable at each opportunity. Also, good point about people being happy to hear anything on the piano. Sometimes we forget that.

I had to take my mom to the hospital for a procedure yesterday. Wonder of all wonders, there's a piano tucked into an out of the way alcove in the lobby. It's all roped off though so I'll have to inquire if they allow people to play it.
